The Craftsman

My journey to becoming a furniture maker began in 1999 when I started woodworking as a hobby. I was mainly self-taught and learning new techniques with every project I built. At that time, I was employed by the Canadian Forces as a member of the 2nd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. In my final two years in the military I had the opportunity to incorporate woodworking into my military service when I was made the supervisor of the Regimental woodshop. In this capacity I crafted numerous projects varying from picture frames to decorative cases.

I was also a member of the team that completely refitted a wing of CFB Petawawa Military Museum with custom architectural woodworking and display cases for various artifacts. As my retirement from the army approached, I realized that my hobby was to become my career.

Upon leaving the military in July 2006, I began working as a shop technician at Rosewood Studio. Rosewood is a world-renowned school of fine woodworking in Almonte, ON. I enrolled in the Nine Month Intensive Fine Woodworking Course in September of 2006 and graduated in May 2007. At this time I became a Resident Craftsman at Rosewood and began my business designing and making studio furniture for discerning clients. As well, I began teaching woodworking part time at the school and writing articles.

In February 2009, I became the editor of Canadian Woodworking magazine. Editing affords me the opportunity to unite the things I like to do most; woodworking, educating and writing. I continue to operate my furniture studio on a part-time basis in a small shop in my home.
